No Government Observances on Taungsdays

The galactic standard calendar, as we know, is based on the five days of Imperial Center's week. The third of these days is Taungsday, a word that we've all grown up with and, probably, not thought much about. But consider, if you will, the origin of this term. The Taungs were an ancient species of savage brutes who resided on Coruscant, and waged a war of extermination against the earliest known Humans, who called themselves the Battalions of Zhell. This ancient battle between the Taungs and the Zhell represents, to me, a symbolic battle of the principles of alien savagery and anarchy against those of sophisticated Human culture. Fortunately for us all, the Zhell—our Human ancestors—won this battle, and the genocidal Taungs later blundered themselves into extinction. Why is it, then, that we commemorate the Taungs, our age old enemies, with a day of the week?

Now, I do not propose that we change the name Taungsday to something else. It simply is what it is. However, if this Empire truly stands for Human High Culture as it claims to, then surely it should have no formal government observances, holidays, or elections on Taungsdays. These should be observed on other days (ideally the fourth day of the week, Zhellday, when possible). I vote in favor because I do not wish to honor a species that, were it alive today, would slaughter us all and feast upon our flesh and, if we were very fortunate, would do so in that order.

I ask you, Senator Cambrist, what about a holiday, such as Empire Day? It is our most patriotic holiday, occurring on the twenty-third day of the fifth month of every year. If 5:23 happens to land on a Taungsday, shall this apply too?

Former Senator of Deralia and the Tammuz Sector (50 BBY - 30 BBY, 18 BBY - 10 BBY)

I have to vote against this. This is just silly and impractical, and might I add silly? This is something that would come up in a junior senate project most high schoolers do. What is wrong with you people? Must we change everything? Most of our holidays...public observances celebrate some sort of murdering mastermind that enslaved whole populations.

Senator Cerra, certainly you know that life is full of tragedies. Surely Garos IV has holidays that celebrate a victor of one thing or another; likely a conflict. It is no different from what Senator Cambrist is proposing. It is a valid change and it is a small one. Vote in favor, Senator, and show your approval that a murdering band being stamped out to ensure our survival is a respectable item.

Be that as it may, Senator Ryuun, surely you must agree with Senator Cerra that this is a surprisingly frivolous use of the Senate's time by a Senator who ordinarily limits himself to more serious matters. I mean no disrespect to Senator Cambrist, but it is odd to see a measure like this from a man who once accused me of proposing, what was it, "priggish prat"? I vote against the measure.

Thank you Vanden. What is being proposed is a waste of time and is just plain old silly. Leave things as they are and if someone wishes for a holiday on this day...so what? Its a holiday. That means no work...I don't know who would honestly be against that no matter what day it falls on.

Perhaps it is a human conception that I cannot fully grasp, but I see no harm in altering the name and purpose of a holiday if the results are the same. I vote in favor.
