Archaeological Dig on Imperial Center

Senators, the origin of the human species has long interested me and, with the rise of "Human High Culture," it is my hope that the Empire, too, will promote interest in this. Humans are, of course, the most numerous species in the galaxy and are responsible for most of its greatest wonders and feats throughout history. But despite this, the origin of this species—that is, the place where humans originated—has never been conclusively established. It is, however, commonly believed to be here on Imperial Center, where many of the oldest human records have been kept, dating back to a time when they called themselves "Zhell." Also, the Zhell are of interest not only because they may be the progenitor of modern humans, but also because we know of great feats and battles of the Zhell but know little about them. Thus, I, and many anthropologists, are of the opinion that there is a "world" of discovery beneath us, and one that should be explored.

I have spoken with Senator North and with Rainier Brandt, the Moff of Imperial Center, with respect to an archeological dig, and both have been supportive of the concept. Moff Brandt has assured me that he can make available a region of the planet suitable to demolish, first, the kilometers of durasteel and duracrete that have been built here over millenia and, then, to excavate the rock and sediment beneath it. He has suggested, however, that I seek funding from the Senate for this worthy endeavor, as I do now, to be allocated through him to administer as needed.

I will be candid with you, Senators. I am of a school of thought in anthropology that humans are, essentially, the "baseline" of most, if not all humanoid species we find today. That is, humans are the perfected, or ideal form, having arisen in an ideal, primordial environment and today, having transcended it. Most other humanoid species, in contrast, are "devolved" or "degenerated" from humans, assuming characteristics over many generations that their different worlds, climates, and environments demand. It is my hope that this archeological dig will prove this school of thought to be true with a comprehensive fossil record.

Whether you agree with this view or not, however, there can be no doubt that there is history buried in the bowels of this world which should be unearthed for all to see for the first time in hundreds of thousands of years.

I propose to be in charge of the operation, with the oversight of Moff Brandt, of course. It is estimated that it will take about 10 years. The greatest cost of this will be in the disposal of durasteel—for which I propose Azure Durasteel, Inc. be contracted to recycle this durasteel and sell preferentially to the Empire for use in the manufacture of Star Destroyers, etc.—and other metals and rocks, which can be disposed of in a similar manner. The second greatest cost will be the labor involved, although this can be remedied by the use of droids. I do not have a total figure for the project, nor do I propose to. Rather, funding will be up for renewal on a yearly basis, at which time new estimates would be made as needed.

I am curious as to how many beings will need to be displaced from their homes to make room for this project? Surely, if you propose to excavate Imperial Center to its crust, a great many beings indeed will be in the way of your drills and explosives. I am curious, also, on what criteria the excavation site was chosen, and on what legal grounds the residents of the site can be told to move.

Senator Cambrist, Anobis is a mining/Archeology planet. Would you allow us to help with this? We'll supply funds, workers and of course equipment.

Deralia is in favor of this effort, and should it be needed, can send several skilled workers with experience in such projects to Coruscant by the beginning of the project and serve throughout its entirety.

I welcome your world's assistance, Senator Riada. Indeed, the mining concerns on your world are well known, and respected. I welcome Deralia's assistance as well, Senator Veritas, although I would like some assurance that the individuals you send will not attempt to steal or destroy artifacts that are recovered from this excavation. I do not mean to sound impudent in saying this, or ungrateful, but as I recall the people of Deralia claim as their ancestors the Taungs—the ancient enemies of the Zhell, whom I mentioned a moment ago—and that this is, in fact, a matter of some pride for your people. If it is the case that fossils or artifacts from ancient Coruscant demonstrate, conclusively, that the Zhell (let us call them Humans) are a superior species, it could perhaps be damaging to the pride of some of your people, could it not? It would certainly be unfortunate if any of them took it upon themselves to destroy evidence of this, and this is my concern, Senator.

We are unique in having a genetic history that traces back to the Taungs, although without as much of a percentage, similar to the "genetic" Mandalorians. However, unlike our genetic brothers, we have advanced not in a vein attempt to rebuild the Taung people, but to build our own future... a Deralian future. While we are proud of our history, we have accepted it as well. I, and the Deralian people as a whole, consider ourselves Humans, and science has long since deemed us such. I do understand your concerns Senator Cambrist, but you needn't worry; we are concerned, and focused, on the Deralian people, not the Taung or any of our ancestors, and no undesirables will be allowed onto the crew that is to assist, should you still allow it.

You have my word, Senator Cambrist that none of the workers that my planet is going to provide will try to destroy, or steal any of the findings. If any are destroyed, Anobis will reimburse, I'll also have the general of the Anobisian army watching over the workers, just in case they get tempted to steal them, is that okay with you, sir? Also I'll alert My planet's archaeology department, once you have a set date for this.

And Anobis approves.

Fabio Riada. King of Anobis.

Garos IV votes in favor of this but would like to make a request. Garos would like to send a small team from the University of Garos' Archaeological Department to take part in the dig and the study of the findings.

That's quite all right, Senator Riada. I trust your Anobisian workers unreservedly. Senator Veritas, I thank you for your assurance. Senator Cerra, naturally the findings from this excavation will be made available for general scientific study. And Representative Vanden, I have not inquired as to the criteria on which Moff Brandt has made available this particular site for the excavation, except that it is situated on an unused garbage chasm, which, as we know, already plunges kilometers deep into the planet. Any questions pertaining to laws on Imperial Center, though, would have to be directed to the Moff. I am focused on the dig itself.
