| In consideration of who should replace the former Senator Veritas as the chair of the Defense Committee, a number of you have risen to prominence. Senator Oriel of Vjun was an early contender, as was Senator Ryuun of Druckenwell. Her temperance earned Senator volFyr of Empress Teta consideration for the chair, and Senator Kirkwood of the Cygnus Empire, having returned from his leave of absence, is a late contender. All of you have strengths to bring to this position, but only one of you can be the Defense Committee's chair.
Senator volFyr, who had the endorsement of Naboo, has endorsed Senator Oriel, as has Senator Ryuun, who himself had the endorsement of Sluis Van. This constitutes rather broad support for Senator Oriel, who has also shown a legislative interest in defense issues in recent weeks and has laid out a vision for the Defense Committee that the Ruling Council has concurred with. The Council, thus, has recommended to the Emperor that Senator Oriel be chair, and the Emperor has agreed. Congratulations, Senator. I hope that you'll consider the other contenders for Defense chair for seats on the Committee, especially Senator Kirkwood, who brings a "minimalist" perspective to defense issues that would help to contrast with your, shall we say, "activist" approach.
The floor is yours, Senator, if you'd care to lay out your plans for the Defense Committee and make any appointments you may wish to.

I would like to thank the Emperor and Ruling Council for this very great trust in myself. I hope that I am able to do it justice. I intend to pursue a policy of protecting the rights of all worlds, and aim to maintain the peace across the Galaxy during my tenure. I fully intend that unlike under the Veritas regime that the Committee will enforce the law robustly and efficiently, we will scrutinize the actions of members of the Empire and where it is needed we will launch investigations. With this aim in mind the committee will be streamlined, with the less efficient members not producing "value for money" being removed.
I would also like to state that I do believe it is a good thing to have new blood of the Defense Committee, as such I am choosing to appoint Senator Ryuun of Druckenwell to the position of Vice-Chair of the Defense Committee, and to appoint Senator Avadrie VolFyr to the Committee as a member. I believe that the Veteran Senator Kirkwood also may have a role in our process, so while not appointing him to the committee directly I am choosing to appoint him as "Special Consultant" to the Committee, primarily due to his background knowledge in the construction of certain classes of vessels.
Furthermore, we announce that the convention worlds to consulting (if not gaining the assent of) the Defense Committee before attempting new purchases will be reinstated, and the Defense Committee will be interested in examining each situation case by case to make suggestions.
