A visit to Rinn

At the time the interception action of Captain Netan was ongoing the Alasakan Aegis fleet had dispatched a vessel to Rinn. This had been on the cards for several months and had been justified on the following basis:

1. To investigate the native species and assess if it was an appropriate time to initiate first contact.
2. The planet was a known "hideout", it would be useful to assess if this had been causing damage to the natives.
3. As an ungoverned planet, it might be appropriate to establish a storehouse in its region to help the Aegis fleet respond to humanitarian crises in the rim.
4. As a potential staging point for anti-slaving raids into Hutt Space.

The Alsakan Government had proceeded in its usual firmly polite manner and had gained permission from the nearby sector capital at Teth to explore the empty system, informing them of their intention for an initial survey with a view to further operations. Thus at this time Captain "Doom" Jackson's DP20 (the "Alsakan Glory") emerged from hyperspace in the Rinn system and began to move towards the planet to make an initial survey.

The small vessel proceeded inwards with its sensors invasively scanning. As this was known as a bolt hole for smugglers the DP20 kept its systems fully tactically ready, and was ready to respond to any threat or flee. While it was likely smugglers would live a well protected corvette alone, it seemed possible they might seek to drive it off, in which case the Alsakan Aegis Fleet forming up near Teth might be forced to link up with the DP20 in order to drive off any hostiles, for the good of the natives.

The DP20 would first needs pass through the asteroid field surrounding Rinn before it could view the planet and its solitary moon. Of course, navigating such would prove to be hardly a problem, and as the majority of the defense systems were dormant, the ship would not be fired upon. Even with active sensors, said weapons scattered throughout the asteroid field were highly unlikely to be located. It would not be until they exited the circular field that shielded Rinn and its moon from prying eyes that they would see more. A pair of large gun emplacements were stationed near the solitary moon; both separated from the asteroid field by sixteen mines that were positioned so as to block easy access to either of the emplacements. Scanners turned towards the moon would show an initial source of electricity and a return scanner beaming back at them. Near Rinn itself, several small vessels, an Action IV transport, a Telgorn dropship and a YZ-775 being the most prominent, were arrayed in a small circle. It was from the Action IV that a drawling voice would hail the as of yet out-of-range corvette.

"Welcome to Rinn, folks. Pleased to meet y'all. What can we do for you this fine day?"

Captain Johnson had taken care to bring his vessel in towards Rinn through the asteroid field, moving swiftly and taking care to avoid the asteroids. The size of the asteroid field (if it encapsulated the system) would mean that weapons could not be very dense at any particular point. If the system was not actually encapsulated with the asteroids, the Alsakan Glory would simply take the long way around (even if it meant a longer journey). The Captain was not uncanny to the fact that his crew had been on shore leave on Teth, and so his mission might have been leaked, thus this could be an ambush. Bearing this in mind he opened a channel to the Alsakan Fleet on a text only frequency, leaving the channel open with a junior officer giving constant updates on the situation, the procedure was as follows, a standard one "If communication is cut for more than 10 seconds, assume we have had our position compromised and send aid." With the Alsakan Fleet less than an hour's jump away, the retribution might be tough.

The DP20 notified home that there was a fairly well fortified position here and continued to move onwards, giving a very wide berth to the mines, gunnery etc, as well as the moon. Staying a long distance out of range and moving on a course to bring it into a high orbit of Rinn.

"This is the Imperial Starfleet! Prepare to die smuggler scum! ... No, this is the Alsakan Aegis Fleet vessel Alsakan Glory, here to investigate the system for the Sovereign world of Alsakan, word is we are planning to build a base here. I presume you are some of the smugglers the Moff told us about. You'll be pleased to know we aren't on anti-smuggling duty, just here to survey the world and assess the locals. Few other ships from our fleet are inbound a little way behind myself. So long as you give us no trouble, you have my word no Alsakan gun will be turned on you. Allow us to ignore you, and we will." spoke the Captain.

The asteroid field was not system-wide, nor exceptionally dense. It was nothing a small enough vessel, such as the DP20, could not navigate without much difficulty, though it would have served to halt the easy progress of a vessel akin to a Star Destroyer. The continual scans from the moon would pick up the transmission; text only or not. It was not such that could be deciphered or read, albeit, but more the knowledge that a hypercomm message of some kind had been sent. So far though, it was little of an issue. Upon hearing the message from the gunship, there came a chuckle in reply, and then the response of that same drawl.

"Wellnow Alsakan folks, you're more'n welcome to the chunk of Rinn we ain''t usin'. As for being smugglers, I'm afraid to disappoint y'all. We're little more than up-jumped folks with some mining equipment and decent funding." With the DP20 coming into high orbit, the trio of vessels altered their position as well, so as to keep a comfortable distance between the Alsakan vessel and themselves, just to be safe.

"Word to the wise, Alsakan Glory, the natives are notorious hagglers and they've a fondness for stealin' shiny things. Don't take it out on 'em too much if somethin' goes missing. Can't blame the little fellers for likin' what they do. Mostly harmless though, unless ya rile 'em up. We got a bit of a city that's for the Tintinna and our folk on the main continent, rather south of the polar regions. We'll leave you alone and you leave us alone and fair's fair. You're free to mine the planet, what part we ain't got operations set up in I s'pose. Plenty for all."

As the field was not system wise it would have avoided the asteroid belt all together and taken a longer route. They would make a mark on the sensors for the fleet when it arrived to avoid it. As it orbited the planet it would pay little attention to the smuggler's hypercomms, it would not be good manners to. Captain Johnson did not buy the honest miners story, but so long as they kept away from him they wouldn't have a problem.

The tactical sensors on the DP20 began to scan the planet's surface as it orbited scanning for life form concentrations, artificial structures, power signals etc as well as optical scans just aiming to give them a fully comprehensive understanding of the area, cursory scans would also be done on the moon and the nearby asteroids.

At Teth the Alsakan Fleet readied itself to depart for Rinn. The group formed up and slowly moved towards the hyperspace jump point, after all they were in no hurry and this was a simple blue milk run.

The group had not sent any hypercomm messages; such had been sent by the DP20 to its fleet; seeing as how the rest of the fleet was not in the system, only a hypercomm message, or text message in this case, would have reached. The ship would find the Tintinna to have a number of above-ground small 'cities' at a relatively low level of technology; primarily steam-power. However, these were offset by the city of New Haven, an obviously 'modern' city as cities went; a bustle that would speak of a rather built-up mining camp that was mirrored by power signatures from the northern part of the continent where the primary mining operations were underway. It was possible that the ship's scanners could not penetrate deeply enough underground to make out the maze of tunnels and warrens the Tintinna had dug out and that had been, in some cases, expanded upon and utilized by those on the planet. In the north, though hidden and blacked out, so to speak, by the sheer lack of power that was sent to the place, was a hidden and concealed hanger within one of the more prominent mountains, connected by a fast-moving and very deeply buried tram to the city beneath New Haven. It was the primary method of shipping goods back and forth as well as the mined ores.

Scans of the moon would reveal it to be inhospitable, but the site of a rather intricate transmitter system. Of the nearest asteroids, they were simply that: asteroids.

The Alsakan Fleet would jump for Hyperspace, with their objective being the Rinn System, avoiding any asteroid belts, this would take quite some time, however.

The Alsakan Glory began to intensify its scans on the city of New Haven. On records there were no modern population centers and the locals had little recorded technology, it was marginally astonishing how much infrastructure was here.

"Damn, lot of rat men here. You boys got permits for this all? Who's the governing power on the world? The Moff told me this place only had a few itinerants, not a city." spoke Johnson over the communicator. He became rather suspicious at the proliferation of technology on the world but didn't mention it yet, just relayed details to the fleet and the Embassy at Teth.

"It's a free world, Alsakan Glory. Not sure how y'all feel about alien species, but we're not too particular about them one way or another. They wanna trade with us, they trade. Some of 'em work with us, others of 'em work for their own ends and mine and we trade with them. It's a win-win in our books. Don't see much need for a permit, especially for folk who don't travel any further Core-wards than the Outer Rim. We mind our business and mine, the Empire and all them other folk further on in mind their business and everyone's happy. As for a governin' power? Well, I'd say each tribe of 'em has their own chieftain. They've their own way of running things and more often than not, they stay peaceable and friendly towards one another. Whoever your Moff is, he ain't been out here in some time then. Permits don't mean much to a place that's never seen 'em." The voice continued in its amusement. It would be plain to tell that whomever the speaker was, was not a member of the normal society of the Empire.

Johnson supposed it all made sense. "Righto, well no complaints with that. I'll just get back to my scans." he said as he continued scanning the planet, making a detailed survey of the planet and area. Of course it was not really fine, Alsakan opposed any intervention in native cultures which had not reached a spaceflight level, as such it was going to be the Fleet's reluctant duty to become the civil power over the world once it arrived. However, he was not foolish enough to attempt to do it himself with just one corvette, and so he bided his time and minded his own business.

The drawling voice paused for a moment, not replying to the captain for a long moment. The trio of ships by themselves made an even match for the lone gunship, after all, and the man behind the voice was confident in some ways for the defenses based around the planet. "Now, now, Alsakan, you wouldn't be thinkin' of gettin' greedy with a whole world that ain't under the Empire's control, would you? No doubt you've all manner of fancy ships and them well-trained pilots who served in that nasty business some years back. Makes it hard for an honest businessman who don't need much for steady government to find some work. All them permits and licenses and such. Like you said, we don't bother you and you don't bother us, right?"

"As I say, I won't give you any hassle if I don't receive any." said the Captain, which was true to a point. The idea the three ships were anything like a match for the DP20 was simply not the case. The DP20, famed for being one of the toughest pocket combat ships in the galaxy could easily outpace, outgun and outlast the three ships if it came to a shooting match, it was arguably even a match for a small frigate such as a Nebulon-B and was certainly endowed with the potential to run rings around these three vessels while tearing them apart at a distance with its gunnery.

The main body of the Alsakan Aegis Fleet which had been dispatched glided through hyperspace, inbound towards Rinn, still roughly 45 minutes away.

What the Captain of the DP20 couldn't know, largely because nobody truly knew, was that two of these three vessels had gone up against not one, but two Star Destroyers of the Imperial-I variety. In one case they had dealt out massive amounts of damage before being forced to retreat and in the other, the Star Destroyer had been forced to flee before the onslaught of the expert crews. Appearing to be little more than met the eye was the key to their operation. A DP20 was much smaller than a Star Destroyer and, while arguably more suited to the task of subduing smaller craft, it was still a solitary vessel.

"Wellnow partner, it seems like we got ourselves a deal. Hate to see it come to blows between us and all. It's a mighty fine ship you got there; Corellian-make unless I guess wrong. Seen one of them things take some trash-talkin' pirates who got too big for their spacesuits apart as easy as you please. Treat her good, cap'n."

Unlike the Imperial-class mentioned, the Alsakan Glory was not commanded by an incompetent rogue Imperial Officer with no backbone. The fact remained that three ships of the classes listed (even with the upgrades they were endowed with) simply were not remotely equal to a fully armed and battle ready Corellian gunship. The Gunship was an order of magnitude faster (as fast as many fighters) and if it came to it did simply outclass this ramshackle collection of converted merchantmen.

The Captain was bored of this tedium and sipped his coffee before replying "Made on Corellia, named on Alsakan." he said, taking pride in his vessel. "This bird has a history of taking apart pirates, Seps, the works. Must be lonely out here for you boys? Can't imagine the locals are much company."

The scans continued, the ship moving slowly into a higher orbit as the world spun below, taking profile shots for the file, moving casually through the system to scan a cloud of helium near the point the Alsakan Aegis fleet would jump in at. The Alsakan Fleet was now 30 minutes away.

Outside of the Imperial-class mentioned, there was the fight that had occurred at far-distant Kamino which was also referenced; an embarrassment that had more than likely been hushed up by the Empire and, as such, the reason hardly anyone outside of the Imperial Naval Command would know of it and even those likely few. Of course, the trio of ships there only comprised a portion of the Red Mynocks' total strength.

"Aw, the locals are a good sort. Squeaky voices in a fashion, but can ya blame the little guys? Besides, nothing like gettin' away from the hustle and bustle of all the civilized worlds. No slight 'gainst Alsakan, mind you, we're just not much for overly fancy comp'ny. So my friends here are urgin' me to ask, you plannin' on settin' down sometime? Or just floatin' around here waitin'. We figure y'ain't the whole of the Alsakan forces to show up, after all."

"We're looking at setting down when we get clearance to make "First contact". I realize you boys already have made it but procedure is procedure, as you will know. You lads got any useful parts to trade? The Contact division of the Government was keen to have this be a flagship example of us interacting with other species, but like as not we will just pick a new world."

The DP20 continued its lazy scanning route about the system, staying close to the point the fleet would jump in.

The Alsakan Fleet was 15 minutes away and approaching fast.
