| Sooo I have what you call a Boston accent. It's pretty thick. I make Ben Affleck in all his Boston movies sound normal. It's been recently brought to my attention that I pronounce a lot of things the wrong way. For example: Equality. Is pronounced (ĭ-kwŏl'ĭ-tē). I pronounce it like 'i-kwal-i-te.' I've tried saying it like everyone else, but it feels weird. I don't know if it has somethin to do with my accent? Haha. I say the F word with an O instead of the U. People are always correcting me. The area I live in (even though it's like 10 mins from Boston) people don't really have an accent. But if they know what I'm saying, why do they have to make me repeat everything?! I have a hard time pronouncing my r's...I say Watah instead of water. But I don't see anything wrong with it :/. Does anyone else have an accent or something that sounds different to people and they give you a hard time? It's drivin me crazy lol. I should be used to it by now grrrr.
I think they're jealous?

| I think the Boston accent on a woman is one of the sexiest things there is, not to get all creeper on ya. But I feel your pain. If it helps, thanks to war that wages between my family (Tennessee, Kentucky, Southern Illinois, Western Missouri) and my friends (Central Illinois, Chicagoland, St. Louis), I have what could best be described as a hybrid of a Southern/Chicago accent, that honestly makes me sound ridiculous, at least in my estimation. I get a hard time about it alot... and yes, Faj, they are jealous. Because Boston is awesome.

| I noticed Wiktionary uses my Northern California dialect as "standard American English." Yay, I'm "standard"!
And Jaron is correct, a woman with a New England accent is one of the sexiest things there is. As long as it's not the Denise "Zazu" McDenna sort of accent.

| When I first moved to California I sounded exactly like Tony Soprano... only with a higher-pitched voice. Now I sound like... Jace... and that makes me sad.

| Southern/Chicago accent eh? That's awesome!
What's Standard anyway? Like a News reporter accent?
No, I don't sound like whoever that is lol. Ill have to get an audio clip of me reading off the sites setting.
And Darth Vader sounds so much better as DAHTH VADAH!
I'd much rather have a sweet southern drall. I have some friends in the South. Love the Southern accent...and any accent from the UK.

| It was an obligatory remark. But for fun, let's see if I can't think up some (relevant) ways the U.S. actually is better than the U.K.
● The U.S. constitution exists on paper and I do have more protections re: free speech, press, etc. than you Britons do. ● For instance, your "super-injunctions" are creepy (and silly, too). ● Fahrenheit is superior to Celsius, and more practical. ● And American women are superior to British women, says Hitchens. ● He preferred to be American for this and other reasons. ● America has much better food (you don't have biscuits!) ● American society isn't as conspicuously class-based and we're more socially mobile, in theory. ● Contemporary American poetry has finally surpassed contemporary British poetry. ● Prince Philip. ● There are more climates here to suit your fancy. ● I've lived in various houses with yards and you Britons generally don't. ● We'll win more medals than you at your Olympics. ● However, we rarely kill people or smash things over sports. ● We've elected a head-of-government/state who is black (I love being able to use that as if it makes up for slavery, segregation, etc.). ● Our monuments, parks, etc. blast yours out of the water. ● We get along with our Muslims here.
That's about it, I guess. That said, it took me quite a while to think up this list, whereas I can probably think of a pro-British list that's twice as long in half the time.

| Quote (Jace_Varitek) ● The U.S. constitution exists on paper and I do have more protections re: free speech, press, etc. than you Britons do. ● For instance, your "super-injunctions" are creepy (and silly, too).
We have freedom of speech protected, but we simply have a higher regard for a "Right to Privacy", but Super-injunctions don't work and have pretty much all been outed. And flexibility is not a bad thing in a constitution, it allows you to keep guns out of the hands of nutcases for example!
Quote (Jace_Varitek) ● Fahrenheit is superior to Celsius, and more practical.
Not true! 0 as freezing 100 as boiling makes more sense. Fact (even your scientists realize this).
Quote (Jace_Varitek) ● And American women are superior to British women, says Hitchens.
Largely, I agree. But a certain emphasis should be placed on largeness these days when it comes to yanks!
Quote (Jace_Varitek) ● He preferred to be American for this and other reasons.
Argument from Authority, I thought you knew better Mr Varitek!
Quote (Jace_Varitek) ● America has much better food (you don't have biscuits!)
Well, more of it at least. And I don't agree, I think British cuisine these days, with all it's influences is the superior of American. But! I will agree yours is more calorific - the technical point of food so I suppose "better" could apply.
Quote (Jace_Varitek) ● American society isn't as conspicuously class-based and we're more socially mobile, in theory.
But not in fact. The British class system is remarkably elastic and it's pretty easy to slip up the chain if you alter the way you act. Note that around 80% of the people in modern Britain are considered "middle class" by the traditional measures now. Also it should be noted that we're divided by class, a largely elitist measure, not by race, the British professions (medicine, law, etc) find ethnic communities over-represented not under-represented.
Quote (Jace_Varitek) ● Contemporary American poetry has finally surpassed contemporary British poetry.
I think that's a pretty subjective matter, but I'm not really a fan of verse so may have to concede this due to lack of knowledge.
Quote (Jace_Varitek) ● Prince Philip.
The Republican Party.
Quote (Jace_Varitek) ● There are more climates here to suit your fancy.
If you're rich enough to move, sure. But the same can be said for Europe, nothing stopping you moving to the Norwegian Tundra or the sun of Southern Europe.
Quote (Jace_Varitek) ● I've lived in various houses with yards and you Britons generally don't.
I've never lived in a house without a yard, I think probably everyone who doesn't live in an apartment or big city has atleast a small one. I'm not sure where this perception comes from.
Quote (Jace_Varitek) ● We'll win more medals than you at your Olympics.
You've got more people and throw more money at it.
Quote (Jace_Varitek) ● However, we rarely kill people or smash things over sports.
We do like a good ruck! But it doesn't happen with any frequency here.
Quote (Jace_Varitek) ● We've elected a head-of-government/state who is black (I love being able to use that as if it makes up for slavery, segregation, etc.).
Quote (Jace_Varitek) ● Our monuments, parks, etc. blast yours out of the water.
Well, making up for lack of antiquity with size isn't a bad approach I suppose...
Quote (Jace_Varitek) ● We get along with our Muslims here.
So do we! There are just a few angry young ones who use it as an excuse to be disorderly. The vast majority of Islamic immigrants (Persians from the 80s mostly) have integrated into society perfectly well.
Like this chap!

And speaking of American comedy...
And that's just skimming the surface, but the closest to a middle eastern comedian in America I've seen!
But I recognize that with all these criticisms, I do have an affinity for the american people and their nation. I certainly visit it as regularly as I do Europe despite the distance at considerable expense. While I do feel it's deeply flawed it's a beautiful idea and has a great deal of potential to be an amazing place; I think we just become sad at seeing a nation which came from our colonies fall short of its potential. A lovely nation populated with lovely people though, sadly ill served by it's political system and certain political minorities I feel!
And it certainly does have some of the best English language literature (Twain, Beecher Stow, Steinbeck etc) and thinkers (Jefferson, Douglass, etc) of the last three hundred years. It's also well endowed with a fascinatingly rumbustious history and some of the best educational institutions in the world. It's the first nation in a very many respects, and certainly I do think Freedom of Speech is something it's very good at, as well as a good generally solid constitution (a certain unfortunate amendment aside).
Plus you have lower taxes! I think we just struggle with the massive amount of "notional equality" being set alongside an equally massive lack of "equality of opportunity" for most people there. Oh and y'all need a proper free healthcare system, I went to hospital the other day here and didn't even have to touch a form = win.
