Well, religion is a complicated thing isn't it? I mean if we try to erase it, it'll infuriate those who follow it will it not?

It's a complicated transaction, if we can not find a way to remove the religion. We will simply do the following.

Have the people of our planet practice their religion esoterically. As long as I do not bring it into the senate there is nothing wrong with it. As I read.

You are quite right, Mr. Baqri. I do not oppose your application, and I have no further questions. I do have one blunt observation, however, which I hope will not offend you. If this observation is correct, you would have no right to be offended. If it is wrong, do forgive me and, perhaps, use it to advise you as you make first impressions from now on. But from this exchange, Mr. Baqri, you do strike me as the sort of man who will say, certainly, and possibly do whatever it takes for your political benefit; a man of motive, but not one of principle. I hope your tenure in the Senate proves me wrong. Good day, Sir.

If I may digress for a moment, I would like to suggest to Representative Vanden that his views with respect to the legal principle of "custom is law" are tragically confused, and unnecessarily so. Be assured, Representative, there is a solution to your desperate flailing about from one moral standard to another—that solution is the Coalition for Improvements, a division of COMPNOR. The Empire has united the galaxy for the security and prosperity of all of its peoples, and so, too, can it unite the galaxy under one culture. I know that His Majesty feels passionately that the disparate peoples of the Empire need not be divided by their provincial differences, but rather united as Imperials above all. Sharing a common culture is, of course, an important part of this (as is sharing a common language, I might add. This is why the Empire has consistently promoted the use of Basic throughout the galaxy).

It is necessary, of course, that "custom is law" on many Imperial worlds; namely, those worlds that simply cannot be rescued from their primitive, alien ways without a considerable expense of Imperial time and resources (Neimoidia, for instance, or Colla IV) that are better spent, instead, on worlds and species that can be more realistically redeemed. In that regard, I believe Mr. Baqri's word that Abregado-san is a planet for which there is hope, and I applaud him in his attempts to liberalize his world. The Empire will assist him to do so if he wishes it to.

But with that, Mr. Baqri, as there appear to be no further questions, I welcome you to the Senate. If you will, please repeat after me:

"I, (state your name), do solemnly swear, under penalty of treason, that I will represent the people of (state your constituency) to the best of my ability, that I will bear true allegiance to the Empire, its Emperor, and its policies, that I will uphold and abide the Imperial Charter, that I will preserve and protect the principles of the New Order, and that I will defend all of these from all enemies of the Empire, both foreign and domestic. So help me."
