Dinner with Jendos Merced

| Ana had worked hard on dinner for hours, and despite the help offered, she took none of it. This was something she needed to do for herself and for Alyn. She just wanted to show him what she was able to do, and she wanted to give him something.
She had set a small table for three, with a set of dishes she had found in the far back of a cabinet. They looked very old, but she loves them immediately and decided to use those, along with a simple crystal set she had found too. The day had flown by as she prepared a roast, and was now putting the finishing touches on a chocolate chiffon cake in the kitchen. Certainly Alyn would be ready, and she was as well, aside from the apron covering her casual blue linen dress. Her shoes were on the floor by the door while she worked.
Hopefully, she thought, Mr. Merced would be there soon.

| Jendos Merced did indeed arrive before too long, having been escorted through the multiple layers of Stark's security rather quickly as he was a known personage. He arrived at last, having been shown to the proper dining hall and he was indeed dressed casually in his old Republic Navy pants with a white shirt and a brown jacket over it. Merced was never one to truly match clothing and this was only further proof of his enjoyment of casual dress.

| Stark was in the dining room when Merced arrived and rose to greet him. "Jendos, my old friend. It has been too long indeed. You look quite hale though. I can only assume the life of a politician is suiting you." He gave a wink and nodded to the doors that led to the kitchen. "My dear Ana is within, preparing the meal. She's still adjusting to all this, you know. Not quite used to it yet. Come, please, sit and tell me how things are going."

| Ana had finished just about everything. Wine was on table , the table was set simply but beautifully, and just as Jendos Merced had settled with Alyn, she pushed the kitchen door open with her hip and had a large earthenware baking dish in her hands. She sat it on the table and relinquished the potholders to beneath it. "I am so sorry...you must be Mr. Merced. Alyn has spoken of you often."
Ana would offer him her hand briefly before she removed the apron and lay it over the back of her chair. "it's a nerf roast. I hope that's alright with you two. And vegetables.". she didn't want to make anything too fancy, but she was sure it would be mouth watering.

| "A pleasure, Miss Riley, and please, call me Jendos. This is supposed to be informal after all. It's high past time that I meet the woman who has stolen the heart of my best friend." Merced laughed and released her hand. "A nerf roast with vegetables, you say? Elegant and tasteful all at once. I think you found a good catch here, Alyn. As for how things are going? Much quieter in the streets with that troublesome fellow quieted, no thanks in part I'm sure to Miss Riley's public letter as much as your own speeches, as well as a backing from the Empire. I don't quite know how you do it, but you make more friends than enemies along your way, and I'm sure you've managed to upset a goodly number of folks at one point or another."

| "This smells absolutely wonderful my love." Stark leaned forward to bask in the aroma of a perfectly-roasted nerf. Leaning back with a pleased sigh, he nodded to Jendos. "A perfect catch indeed. It's rare to find a woman who isn't obsessed with wealth; if there is one in the galaxy then I managed to find her. As for upsetting people, I like to think I might have ruffled a feather or two, but nothing permanent. Business is business, after all, and sometimes you have to paddle a few backsides to gain a contract or keep subordinates honest."
Stark stood and pulled Ana's chair out for her. "Come my love, sit and relax. You put a lot of work into this meal."

| "It's Ana, please." She said politely as she sat down next to Alyn. "Not obsessed is quite right. I actually quite dislike it. His servants aren't used to not taking care of him." She said as she took a drink of water from her glass.
"I spent quite a bit of time in the wine cellar today picking something out for you two that would go well with the meal. And with dessert." she smiled some before she moved her hand over to Alyn's and squeezed his fingers lightly.

| Merced snorted laughter for a moment and shook his head. "Servants indeed, Ana! You should have seen this man on the bridge of a ship. We come under attack by a Separatist vessel and people start to panic; he was the only cool head about. No servants to help him there but by the Force, the man can bark orders like none other. This is indeed a fine wine you've selected and it goes quite well with the nerf. Did you work as a cook before, if I may ask?"

| "Ana feels that she must do more for me," Stark informed his friend. "I say she does too much already, and this is indeed a perfect wine for the meal. I'm curious to see what you'll procure for desert as well." Stark laughter had a faint edge to it as Merced brought up mention of the war. "No war stories, Jendos, amusing as they might be. Those were hard time for everyone involved."

| Ana sat her glass down on the table before she filled their plates. "No, not at all. My aunt taught me. She was an amazing cook." she said as she sat back in her chair gently. "Until very recently, I worked for Senator Vanden of Naboo..." she said simply as she poured the wine for the both of them.
"On the bridge of a ship?" Ana looked between the two of them briefly. She had known Alyn was in the military, but she did not know the details of it. He had not spoken of it and she didn't want to ask about something that might bring up bad memories for him. She cared for him too much for that. "Perhaps he is right, Jendos. Another time perhaps..."

| "Vanden, eh? I've heard good things about him, though I doubt I'll ever meet the man or travel to Naboo. I like where I'm at in the galaxy and I've traveled about enough. Thank you kindly for the meal." Merced turned a scowl on Stark. "Not just any ship; stop being so modest, Alyn! He commanded one of the Venator-class, a prime warship of the Republic Navy! Your fiance is highly decorated you know."

| Stark sighed and shook his head. "It was just being in the right place at the right time. I'm no hero Jendos, you know that. I never have been and I've never wanted to be. Any other man could have done the same. It just so happened that I was there when I was needed and I stepped up to the game. Jendos seems to think that because I saved his life a time or two that I'm something of a wonder."

| Ana looked between the two of them interestedly. "I did not know that, to be honest.' she said as she sipped her water. "I think perhaps that you are both a bit right, don't you think? A hero is someone who does not want glory, and who just does what he feels is right to save others.' she said and then glanced to Alyn.
"He does what is necessary for the well-being of others." she murmured.

| "Oh, I agree, I agree," Merced chipped in amicably. "I simply think amounts of extreme modesty are not becoming of any man. To be sure, braggarts are an extreme, but a man must take pride in what he's done, whether he intended to be a hero or not. Ah, well. There are times I miss those days, before all this political junk was heaped on my head." Merced shot a pointed glance Stark's way. "You sure there was nobody else you would have had run your bloody House instead of me?"

| "I just do what I must, when I must, for the people I care about." Stark reached across to squeeze Ana's hand lightly for a moment before considering his friend. "You know full well that there was nobody else who could have done it. I trust you more than any man I know; even more than some of my castle guards. You had the talent, the charm and the political manner that allowed you to keep House Malos in good standing and you've managed it well."
