| She kept a grip on his hand, smiling warmly. For a moment, she worried that the conversation was making her fiancee uncomfortable, so she worked to change the subject. "So Jendos, how is the roast? Done well enough?" she asked before she refilled his glass with the crimson hued wine she had chosen.
It did make her wonder why he had never told her of those times. He would have eventually though, she was sure, when the time was right. They didn't, after all, know each other very well. Ana frowned briefly. "I'll get dessert." She said before she swept from her chair, finally letting go of Alyn's hand, and vanished into the kitchen to retrieve the cake.

| "The roast is perfect, Ana!" Merced beamed at her as he poured himself another glass of the wine. As she retreated to the kitchen, Merced looked over again at Stark. "Keep it in good standing, pah! More like you left me to deal with those loathsome toadies of House Garth. If nothing else, House Volmen is being a bit less standoffish. They never could decide whether to crap or get off the refresher and they still play their same agenda. Be careful, Alyn. I wouldn't put it past Tommen Garth to send someone to pay you a visit... or to send someone to your fiance. I don't know anything," Merced stated, holding up his hands as if to ward off angry words, "But you never trusted them and neither do I."

| Stark watched Ana move away with a small smile on his face. The smile faded and his gaze hardened as he listened to what Jendos had to say. "Keep all the eyes and ears out, my friend. I lack the ability to always safeguard here, and by Shadowguard cannot always be there all the time. Even then, they are only human. Well, most of them. You spend more time around the heads of the Houses than I do, so you would know far better. There's only been one time Castle Stark has been breached by assassins and we both know how that ended." Stark recalled it all too well; he'd dispatched all four in a quick and vicious fight.

| Ana would return moments later with the cake on a plate in one hand, and some small dessert plates and forks in the other. She sat the plate between them. "It's a chocolate chiffon with a glaze. It was Artemis' favorite...my favorite to make, actually." She had caught a bit of their speaking while she was in the kitchen, just enough to know what they were talking about.
"I am not sure I understand this feud that is going on here. Why do these people dislike you so much? How long as it been going on?" Ana asked before she took another drink from her water glass. "Common sense would dictate to just work it out, if possible. Extend a peace offering?"

| Stark left his cake untouched for a moment as Jendos fell to devouring his indeed, albeit with manners, one could assume, as he considered the question. "House Garth has always been an ambitious House; the system itself acts as a checks and balances with all three Houses having a say in the running of the planet. For some reason, Garth offspring for the past six or seven generations have been real bastards. Money and power motivate them. House Volmen does tend to sit the fence a bit and never truly takes sides, though they were quite against me sitting as head of House Malos; part of the reason I named Jendos as my successor and stepped down. House Malos has traditionally been the voice of calm reason within the political arena on Lorrd. Furthermore, the current head of Garth bears a personal grudge to a bastard child like myself being the heir to an ages-old family like House Malos. I doubt there's a peace offering I could give to Tommen Garth short of offering up all my wealth and departing Lorrd, which I am not inclined to do."

| There was something that did not make sense to Ana. Sure, she understood politics quite well, but when it came to unbiased hatred, she was at a loss. "There has to be something that you....we....could do though, Alyn. Don't you think so, Jendos?" It only made sense to her that something should be able to be worked out.
"Have you ever just sat down with this man and outright asked him what the problem is? I would be more than willing to do it for you if you think that it would help." She had helped before, after all.

| Merced shrugged slightly. "Tommen Garth and I aren't exactly on friendly terms, though he tolerates me. He tends to fly into a rage at times about Alyn because he wanted to claim House Malos and add it into his own holdings. I never quite considered it a feud that would ever end."

| "I doubt he'd be so amenable to a face-to-face with me, my love." Stark chuckled and shook his head. "I'd not want you within a mile of the man. Oh, I doubt he'd ever lay a hand on you. He's far, far too smart for that, but he has deep pockets and a long arm, as well as few unsavory contacts as well as his own private family army. They're the ones I'd worry about getting hold of you. I doubt he'd be so foolish as to try anything, but that's part of the reason the Shadowguard watch you even here. As I told Jendos, Castle Stark isn't likely to be breached by anything short of an Imperial orbital bombardment. I did build it rather defensively."

| "So you're saying I should give up on trying to help?" She said as she sat back in her seat. The dessert was left untouched by her, as too much sugar had been making her sick to her stomach more often than note. She was glad, however, that Jendos seemed to enjoy it. "I have proven to be quite diplomatic, have I not?" She wouldn't push of course, as she knew why he was being overly cautious, aside from the fact that he loved her.
The pair had much more at stake now that she was with child, a fact which she was unsure if he had shared with his friend. For the moment, she said nothing more about it.

| "If you can be as diplomatic as your public letter showed, you might have a chance," Merced offered thoughtfully. "However, if I might suggest, it would be better to wait until after the wedding to do this. That way your word may carry more weight as Ana Stark, wife of the Lord of the Kinyov Province rather than simply Ana Riley."

| Stark had not, in fact, shared any such news about their child with anyone... yet. Merced might well be the first if it did come up though. "I have no doubts of your diplomatic ability, my love. You could calm a Lorrdian blizzard with a few words, I have no doubt. Tommen Garth is another matter though. Unfortunately, Jendos may be correct; your word would seem to have more weight once you are no longer an outsider, so to speak. The old families put quite a bit of stock in bloodlines."

| "The thing is, Alyn...even if they put a lot of stock into bloodlines, as you say. I will never be a part of that...Stark is just a name, after all." She murmured as she sipped at her water again. There was a moment where she thought that being an 'outsider' as he said, would always be what she was here. Or maybe she just hadn't given it enough time. After all, it took her years to get comfortable at the Vanden estate, to actually feel like she belonged there.

| "Stark? Just a name?" Merced, who'd had a bit much to drink, snorted a bit with laughter again. "Stark's more than just a name, my dear lady! Don't you know who his father is? Oh, it's far more than a name, even if the bloodline itself isn't that old, and he still carries the blood of House Malos in his veins; the last true son of House Malos."
